Chesterfield FC's Carabao Cup campaign has ended at the first-round stage following a 1-0 defeat to Fleetwood.
The Spireites dominated possession but fell behind in the 14th minute when ex-Chesterfield player Ched Evans capitalised on a goalkeeping error from Ryan Boot to slot home from a tight angle.
How the match unfolded
Fleetwood began brightly when Kane Thompson-Summers set the game in motion, but Chesterfield quickly took control. Dilan Markanday saw plenty of the ball and produced a strong run down the right with a well-delivered cross into the area, though no Chesterfield player was close enough to connect.
Fleetwood won two corners in quick succession on the left, both taken by Harrison Neal, but neither produced a clear chance as Boot caught cleanly.
After Evans' goal, Chesterfield pressed forward. A looping ball from Josh Koroma found Markanday surrounded by defenders, and the move yielded a corner kick. Ruel Sotiriou then struck from the edge of the area but his effort rose over the crossbar.
Chesterfield continued to apply pressure, with new signing Remeao Hutton's long throws creating danger for the home defence.
